I paint scenes
that often go unnoticed. While many artists are drawn to majestic and
dramatic scenes of inescapable beauty, I am drawn to the still and calm
places. Hoping to instill in others the same respect and love for these
places, I paint these scenes to capture their essence before they are
gone. Painting on location, from photographs, and from memory, I create a
link to those places many people may never see. Just as the elements of
air and water, though unseen, are essential for life on earth, so too are
the hidden, quiet places essential to our universe. I hope in each
painting to introduce the viewer to a new understanding or appreciation of
the path less traveled.
I enjoy painting
landscapes on location (en plein air) and feel that the act of doing so
educates me more fully and connects me more completely to my surroundings. |

There is more information available to the artist when the subject is
present, whether that subject is a model, still-life setup, or landscape.
I also paint from photographs, though while using photos I keep in mind
that information garnered from the experience of painting from life; the
way shadows dance with reflected lights, the way fog or mist grays the
palette. My goal is to paint the feeling of a place or moment.
Paintings are artists’ tools of communication. Painting in
a minimal style using oil paints or soft pastels, I develop portrayals of
what I recall of a scene once memory removes the excess. Just as my memory
will seldom include small insignificant details, the painting should not
either. Without the clutter of the unnecessary, we communicate more fully.
